Preparatory Sessions of IIOE Pilot Project in Mongolia Kicked off

On 9 September 2022, UNESCO-ICHEI and the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST) jointly organized a leadership consultation as well as a faculty mobilization meeting ahead of the upcoming official launch of their collaborative project, "Blended Learning Capacity Building for STEM teachers in Mongolia".

During the leadership consultation, Prof. Lim Cher Ping, Chief Expert of IIOE, UNESCO-ICHEI, and Prof. Charles R. Graham, Brigham Young University, U.S., as the lead experts of the pilot project, presented the objectives and tasks of the pilot project to Prof. Badarch Dendev, Advisor to Minister of Education and Science, Mongolia, and Prof. Uuganbayar Tumurkhuu, Director of International Affairs and Cooperation, MUST. They also had an in-depth exchange on the expectations of MUST, who is the project's main implementer and beneficiary institution, the model of teacher professional development, the sustainability of the project, and the difficulties and challenges that may be encountered in digital transformation at the faculty and institutional levels.

Prof. Badarch Dendev noted that the pilot project coincides with Mongolia's long-term development policy “Vision-2050” and the "Digital Nation" initiative, and the rich experience accumulated by MUST, especially the Open Education Center (OEC) in the field of blended learning, can effectively support the project. He also emphasized the significance of supportive policies of institutional leadership and the training of master teachers for institutional digital transformation.

Prof. Uuganbayar Tumurkhuu stated that promoting blended teaching requires the cooperation of national education authorities, higher education institutions, international organizations, and the private sector to ensure its sustainability. He also pointed out that there is a huge disparity between urban and rural education in Mongolia, and that blended learning is an effective way to address this issue.

After the consultation, Prof. Ganbat Danaa, Director of OEC at MUST, Coordinator of IIOE National Centre in Mongolia, and Coordinator of this pilot project, gave an introduction of MUST's various cooperation projects with UNESCO-ICHEI to nearly 50 master teachers and managers from MUST and other domestic universities, with an emphasis on the pilot project, and invited the participating teachers to actively take part in this project.

As a next step, UNESCO-ICHEI and MUST will jointly conduct 3 pre-training sessions for participating teachers and administrators on September 20, focusing on blended learning and STEM innovative pedagogy.
